The Morning Shave, Reconsidered

Eight minutes that set the tone for everything that follows.

In the modern rush of everyday life, the morning shave has been degraded to a chore. Most men treat it as an annoying five-minute task — pressurised chemical foams from aerosol cans, cheap plastic multi-blade cartridges. The result? Skin irritation, ingrown hairs, and a routine completely stripped of pleasure.

True style extends far beyond the clothes you wear; it encompasses how you care for yourself. Reconsidering your morning shave means turning a mindless chore into a quiet, meditative ritual of self-respect.

1. The Hardware (Return to the Single Blade)

The multi-blade cartridge is a marketing myth. When five blades glide across your face, the first blade cuts the hair, while the subsequent blades tug and slice beneath the skin line — leading to razor bumps and irritation.

  • The Safety Razor. A classic double-edge (DE) safety razor uses a single, ultra-sharp blade. It requires zero downward pressure — the weight of the heavy metal handle does the work for you. It cuts the hair perfectly level with the skin surface, drastically reducing irritation.
  • Open Comb vs. Closed Comb. For beginners, a closed-comb safety razor offers a protective bar that holds the blade at an optimal, safe angle. An open comb is preferred by advanced wet-shavers with thicker beard growth.

2. The Software (Ditch the Aerosol Can)

The white foam that shoots out of a pressurised can is loaded with synthetic drying agents and propellants that strip your skin of its natural moisture.

  • The Shaving Brush. A proper shave begins with a brush — traditionally badger hair or high-end synthetic fibres. The brush does more than apply soap; it gently exfoliates the skin, lifts the facial hair away from the face, and creates a rich, warm lather.
  • Creams and Soaps. Invest in traditional hard-milled soaps or concentrated shaving creams enriched with natural tallow, shea butter, or essential oils. They create a dense, slick barrier that protects your skin and lets the blade glide effortlessly.

The Three-Step Ritual

  • Preparation. Never shave cold. Always shave right after a warm shower, or apply a hot, damp towel to your face for 60 seconds to soften the hair follicles and open the pores.
  • The Pass. Shave strictly with the grain on your first pass — the direction your hair grows. If you want a closer shave, re-lather and make a second pass across the grain. Never press down.
  • The Recovery. Rinse with cold water to close the pores and calm the skin. Finish with an alcohol-free, moisturising aftershave balm containing witch hazel or aloe vera to restore hydration.

“Taking time to do things properly is the ultimate modern luxury.”

When you slow down and master the geometry of a traditional shave, the morning routine stops being an obligation. It becomes the moment you ground yourself before stepping out to face the world.
